Frequently Asked Questions About Early Intervention
-
Early intervention is specialized support for infants and toddlers (birth to age three) who have developmental delays or are at risk for them. In California, these services are coordinated through the Early Start program. Research is clear that the earlier support begins, the more effective it is — a young child's brain is at its most adaptable in the first three years.

Our therapists come to your home at a scheduled time and work with your child through play-based activities, with you participating throughout. Sessions happen wherever your child is comfortable — the living room floor, the high chair, the backyard. There's nothing to prepare; your everyday home and toys are exactly what we need.
-
Trust your instincts. If your child seems behind on milestones — not rolling, sitting, crawling, or walking around the typical ages, not babbling or using words, or losing skills they once had — it's worth an evaluation. You don't need to wait and see, and you don't need a doctor's permission. An evaluation gives you information either way, and there is no downside to asking early.
-
Services provided through California's Early Start program are at no cost to eligible families, regardless of income. The evaluation through the San Diego Regional Center is also free.
-
Contact the San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) and ask for an Early Start evaluation for your child. Anyone can make a referral — a parent, pediatrician, or caregiver. If your child is found eligible, an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) is created.

We serve children from birth to age three. Around the third birthday, children who still need support transition to preschool-based services through their school district — and we help families prepare for that transition.
-
The first visit is mostly about getting to know your child and family: your routines, your concerns, and your goals. We'll observe your child at play, answer your questions, and start building the plan together.
